About Neven Tudić
he motive of my work in visual art is the pursuit of the fundamental aspects of visual objectivity (registered through emotions), which represents the immediate first stage of cognition—rooted, above all, in the fact that it simply is. For if the criterion of knowledge is what I see and sense before me, then such knowledge is always based on a subjective, individual perspective and is inevitably limited. This relativity does not call into question the subject itself, which, ultimately—especially in politics—seeks power to impose and establish its own opinion as the best. Through this, the world is subjected to power, a force through which my own superiority is asserted over others.
We, as human beings, above all, are.
This being—our essence—is the most unlimited, the freest state, which should serve as a reason to question my own limited and subjective stance, especially when it is enforced through power, strength, or force. The perception of this profound being is what drives our work, inspiring us to transcend constraints by recognizing that we are beings open to freedom and limitlessness—not merely functions of others or the superior.
Artistic Journey
Neven Tudić is a Croatian painter and multidisciplinary artist whose work explores perception, knowledge, and power. He is interested in how we see and understand the world, recognizing that our perspective is always shaped by personal experiences. His art challenges the idea of absolute truth, especially in social and political contexts where opinions are often presented as facts.
Through painting, video, installations, and performance, Tudić examines the tension between subjective perception and the desire for control. The work of this contemporary Croatian artist invites the viewer to question assumptions and embrace the idea of human existence as open and free rather than confined by external influences.
Influences
Tudić’s approach is shaped by his interest in philosophy, politics, and contemporary Croatian art. His work reflects themes of power and freedom, often connecting personal experiences with larger social and historical narratives. He draws inspiration from conceptual and avant-garde movements while maintaining a distinctive, personal style.
Art Education
Born in Šibenik, Croatia, Neven Tudić studied at a classics-oriented secondary school in Split before earning a degree from the Faculty of Political Sciences in Zagreb. His academic background in politics and philosophy plays a key role in his artistic themes.
Philosophical Views on Abstraction
“I have presented about 20 latest works in abstract geometry in Gallery Steiner, constructed from oblique lines and the resulting surfaces in combination with triangles, circles and other geometric shapes. I further strengthened the straight-sloping lines, and thus marked them with woolen threads in various colors, thus giving the impression of a disturbed smooth surface of the canvas, and thus approaching the installations and performances, which contents I prefer.
With geometric abstraction, I wish to abandon the classical visual expression of imitation, Mimesis, imitation or reflection on what we observe, the landscape, views, marinas, but and facts of all kinds embedded in the concepts of politics and any positively constructed opinion.
With this separation, and isolation (yesterday, in the Corona era, the term is too often used) I enter an area with indications of the liberation of all that exists. But still it is only a path to full liberation, liberation “from” landscapes or critical reactions to the negativity of various political decisions (revolutionary Fluxus or even from a long-term accept as symbol of liberation: Nirvana), which gave birth terms: intelligence engagement and vice versa: their passivity.
In short: My main focus of engagement is to seek answers to the causes of phenomena, but also the answer to the question and what is in itself cause and effect, their genesis, condition and conditioned, to seek answers based on opinion, being, “das Ereignis” (Heidegger).
If it is a condition, what we “get rid of” is only the path to full freedom. It is clear that FREEDOM OF CHOICE also falls under the conditional category. But nowadays, without thinking, it is planetarily adopted within the already mentioned atmosphere of Covid. However, it is easier to automatically adopt and reshape anything for an attack, and not to think about it.”
